PUBG Creation Contest Opens a New Door for Game Designers
The PUBG creation contest offers $95,000 in prizes and featured placement for community-built modes, while revealing why distribution may matter more than the money.
PUBG wants to become more than the place where you crawl through grass for 20 minutes and get deleted by somebody you never saw.
The bigger play: turn its players into game designers. There's prize money attached, but creators should look past the shiny number. Distribution is the real reward here.
PUBG opens the gates
Krafton has announced a global PUBG: Battlegrounds creation contest with CurseForge and a total prize pool of $95,000. It's tied to PUBG: Playgrounds, a new PC-only area for discovering community-built modes.
Playgrounds and contest submissions are scheduled to open on August 12, 2026. Creators can enter projects in three lanes: competitive combat, survival against AI or environmental threats, and less shooty ideas such as racing, parkour, puzzles, and party games.
Each lane has $25,000 available across ten winners. First place gets $10,000, followed by $5,000 for second and $3,000 for third. The remaining seven receive $1,000 each. Six community-selected projects can earn another $2,500 apiece, while ten early standouts receive $500.
The deadline is September 2, with winners due September 14. The 30 category winners are expected to receive featured placement inside Playgrounds between October and December. Full requirements sit on the official contest page1.
You'll need a BATTLEGROUNDS Plus account to build and submit. Regular players won't need Plus to play featured creations.
The bit that matters
This isn't PUBG suddenly matching Fortnite's creator economy. Epic paid Fortnite developers $352 million during 2024, while creator-made islands captured 36.5% of total playtime, according to its ecosystem report2.
PUBG is starting smaller. A contest. Selected placement. No announced engagement-based income for Playgrounds creators.
Prize money buys dinner. Repeatable distribution builds a business. Don't confuse the two.
Still, featured matchmaking solves a nasty creator problem: you can build the cleverest mode on Earth and hear nothing but digital crickets if nobody can find it. PUBG's established gunplay also gives creators a useful shortcut. You're designing the concept, not teaching players how shooting works.
Krafton already offers creators a 5% share of supported G-Coin purchases through its Creator Network3. Whether Playgrounds eventually gets its own ongoing economy is the question worth watching.
Your move
- Build one clean loop. A simple mode people replay beats an ambitious half-working world.
- Design for clips. Add moments that are obvious, surprising, and understandable without explanation.
- Recruit testers now. You have less than a month once submissions open. Bugs will eat more time than creativity.
- Keep your files and brand portable. PUBG is one distribution channel, not your entire creator identity.
