Canon First Cut Contest 2026: Pitch Your Film for $25,000
The Canon First Cut Contest offers four $25,000 production awards for creators who can pitch a compelling film idea in three minutes or less.
Your half-written film idea has a funding problem. Canon would like to see whether it also has a storytelling problem.
The company's First Cut Contest returns today, October 8, with four $25,000 production awards. Useful money. But first, you have to sell the project in three minutes or less.
The deal
Creators can submit a public one-to-three-minute video pitch through November 10 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The pitch must appear on YouTube, TikTok or Instagram, tag @canonusa and include #canonfirstcutcontest. There's also an entry form on the official contest page1. Posting alone doesn't count.
Canon has split the contest into four lanes: cinematic narrative, action-adventure, documentary and lifestyle or vlog. Anna Sitar, Zach King, Sam Newton and Eva Gutowski will each judge one category.
Twelve finalists will be invited to a Los Angeles screening on December 8. Their pitches go on the big screen, and each finalist receives a creator kit built around Canon's EOS R50 V2, plus a lens, microphone and tripod grip.
One winner per category gets $25,000 and an hour of mentoring with a judge. Canon awarded the same total pot to four creators in the contest's first run, so this isn't one giant check with eleven consolation handshakes.
Why this matters
The interesting bit isn't the camera. It's that Canon wants a proof of vision, not a finished masterpiece.
That favors creators who can make people understand an idea quickly. A working hook. A few memorable frames. Enough evidence that you can actually finish the thing once money enters the room.
Don't make a trailer for your talent. Make a case for the project. The public-post requirement also turns the application into content. Even if Canon says no, you've shipped a polished concept that can attract viewers, collaborators or another funder. One previous finalist later described using the event to connect with filmmakers while continuing to seek producers and investors for her documentary.
Canon isn't alone here. Adobe committed nearly $10 million in grants and product support3 during 2026. Camera and software companies increasingly need creators making ambitious work with their tools. That dependency can be rather handy.
What to do next
Pick the smallest convincing version of your big idea. Don't cram an entire season bible into 90 seconds. Show the character, conflict and visual flavor.
Shoot for strangers. Your friends already understand your genius. Judges don't. Test the pitch on someone who knows nothing about the project.
Build one reusable cut. Keep the core video platform-neutral, then adjust captions, framing and the opening beat for each social feed.
Read the rules before production. Check eligibility, music rights and submission requirements now. Losing $25,000 over paperwork would be painfully on-brand for the creator economy.
