Chess Creator Opportunities: Chris Roberts Joins Chess.com
Chess creator opportunities are expanding as Chris Roberts brings esports-style media strategy to Chess.com, offering creators practical ideas for formats, visible progress and audience growth.
Chess.com isn't hiring Chris Roberts to improve the little horse animation.
It's hiring him to turn chess into a bigger entertainment machine. More shows, more creator crossovers, more moments that escape the chess bubble. If your content touches gaming, competition or learning, that machine may need you.
The new player
Roberts joined Chess.com as vice president of Media and Content Services in late July. He'll oversee video, social, editorial and broadcasts while connecting that work with partnerships and live events.
Before this, he led global publishing events at Riot Games, working around heavyweight esports titles including League of Legends and Valorant. In other words: he knows how to package competition for people who aren't studying the scoreboard like it's scripture.
And Chess.com has serious raw material. The company reported 267 million registered members1 as of June 30, with 10.2 million average daily active users during the second quarter. Players completed 2.8 billion games in those three months.
That's not a niche community. That's a country with opening theory.
Why it matters
Chess.com's best creator format isn't two grandmasters silently calculating 19 moves ahead. It's talented entertainers making very understandable mistakes under pressure.
PogChamps proved the model. Its April 2026 edition put eight creators with ratings below 700 into a $100,000 tournament. Jynxzi won after turning his training with Levy Rozman into an ongoing content arc. The final reportedly attracted more than 200,000 concurrent viewers across the wider creator ecosystem. Being the expert isn't always the job. Sometimes your job is to struggle publicly without becoming unbearable. Harder than it sounds. This is the bit creators should steal. The game provides rules and tension. The creator provides personality, progress and a reason to return tomorrow.
Chess.com also runs a streamer program3 for creators across Twitch and YouTube, including players who aren't masters. Meanwhile, Lichess4 remains a strong free, open-source alternative with no advertising. Chess.com's advantage isn't merely the board. It's the media network being built around it.
Your move
First, don't pitch "I could promote Chess.com." Pitch a format. A 30-day rating climb. Creator versus community. A coach trying to repair your deeply cursed decision-making.
Second, make progress visible. Ratings, streaks and rivalries give viewers a reason to follow the next episode instead of politely liking one clip and disappearing forever.
Third, keep your audience portable. Events can deliver a lovely spike. Use it to move people toward your channel, newsletter or community - not merely another platform's account page.
Chess.com just hired someone who knows how to make games feel bigger than games. Smart creators won't wait until the tournament invitation lands.
